A Perthshire man has quit his job after scooping £2.2 million from a £1 online bet but says his only extravagance so far has been to pay off his mortgage.
The new millionaire hit the jackpot while playing an online slot game called Genie Jackpot, run by bookmaker Paddy Power, on Boxing Day.
Speaking exclusively to The Courier, the 39-year-old winner, who has asked to remain anonymous, said: “I normally put maybe £20 on on a Saturday a couple of horses or a football coupon or something like that. I’d played that game before so when I went on to see if any of my bets had come up and decided to have acouple of spins and luckily it was my day.
“I played a £1 spin and bang it said ‘congratulations you’ve won £2.2m’. I told my wife and she said I’d won £200k but I said no, that’s £2m apparently all the colour had drained from my face but then we started celebrating.
“I didn’t react like I thought I would I thought I’d be jumping up and down, screaming but it was more of a shock. My hands were shaking and my heart was pounding in my chest. Mybiggest win before was maybe a couple of hundred pounds.”
He added: “I’ve handed in my notice I thought I owed them that so I finish in a few weeks.
“I probably sound like the most boring guy in the world but I’ve never had any ambition to have a fleet of Ferraris.
“The only thing I have done so far is pay off my mortgage. My dream is to build a nice big house for me and my family.”
He added: “You daydream about winning the jackpot but you never actually think it’s going to happen to you I’m still in shock!”
