St Johnstone fans are being asked to support a major fundraising event in June.

Recognising the importance of teams in achieving success, volunteer chairman and cancer survivor Mike Thomas, of Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Perthshire, met St Johnstone players and manager Tommy Wright to promote Relay For Life Perthshire.

Teams of between eight and 15 people are invited to take part in the event, which will take place for the first time in Perth, on the North Inch, overnight between June 20 and June 21.

The St Johnstone team urged people to register now.

Mr Thomas said: “Relay For Life is a great way to spend time with your friends, family and colleagues while raising money for a seriously worthwhile cause.

“Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer.

“Taking part is a positive way to be part of the local community and help make a real difference.

“This is the first time Relay For Life has been held in Perth and it would be great if local people and companies signed up to make it a huge success.”

Mr Wright added: “The club are delighted to help promote Relay for Life because it’s a fun and healthy way to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.

“So I would urge as many Saints fans as possible to put a team in for this great event.”

Participants raise as much money as possible in the months leading up to the overnight celebration, through a wide range of activities from karaoke competitions to quizzes, supermarket bag-packs to charity balls, and securing donations from friends, families and work colleagues.

Teams then come together for a 24-hour celebration of what they have achieved.

Cancer survivors are the guests of honour and they open the relay by leading the first lap.

As dusk falls, the Candle of Hope ceremony will begin.

This will involve specially made bags, which will be decorated with touching messages in memory of loved ones, being filled with sand and lit up with candles.
