Councillors agree to investigate video streaming debates

The possibility of allowing people to follow live video coverage of Perth and Kinross Council debates is to be investigated.

Councillors agreed that the issue should be looked at despite fears that “gaffes” in the chambers might find their way on to YouTube.

Councillors Willie Robertson and Willie Wilson lodged a motion with the full council asking for the logistics and costs involved to be investigated.

They told the meeting that, as Perth and Kinross is such a large area, the move would save people the cost of travelling to Perth to see a debate on issues that affected them.

Mr Robertson also pointed out that the public gallery can only accommodate a limited number of people.

Councillor Ian Miller said he was happy enough for a report to be made but he questioned such investment when, in 12 months time, staff are to be decanted to another building while important work is carried out.

Councillor Archie MacLellan said his fear was that something said in a meeting, even inadvertently, could end up on YouTube.
