MP Pete Wishart claims he was left “shaken” after a fellow MP launched a foul-mouthed tirade at him in the House of Commons.
The Perth and North Perthshire MP said that without warning the Labour MP Jim Murphy told him to “f*** off aggressively again and again”.
Mr Wishart said the outburst was unprovoked and at one point he even feared that it could have descended into a physical altercation.
The clash happened as Mr Wishart counted the number of Scottish Labour MPs taking part in the spare room subsidy vote.
“Jim and I famously do not get on, we just avoid each other,” said Mr Wishart.
“I said, ‘Everything alright?’ And he lost it. I could not believe it, he was shouting F off. He did it in front of his colleagues. This shouldn’t happen in the workplace let alone the House of Commons.
“He obviously has anger issues, it is totally unacceptable to launch into a tirade against a colleague in the House of Commons. Choice language is sometimes used but this was verbal abuse right in front of my face, ranting.
“I was a bit shaken, there was no excuse for that at all, people could not believe it. He has not made any attempt to get in touch and apologise. I did not think he would be big enough.”
Mr Wishart said that as far as he was concerned the matter was now closed and he would not be making an official complaint.
“I will put it down to experience,” he said.
Mr Wishart shared his experience with his near 6000 Twitter followers describing it as “an interesting old day”.
“Westminster is getting to be a bit more of an angry, intolerant place to be for the very few of us there that dare to say Yes,” he added.
Mr Murphy, MP for East Renfrewshire, who recently hit out at “CyberNat trolls” who subjected him to a “bucketload of personal bile” could not be contacted for his views on the incident.
