Speed limit on Kinross road could be increased to encourage more motorists

Councillors will consider a proposal to increase the limit to 40mph.

A Kinross road speed limit could be raised to make it more appealing for motorists.

Councillors will consider a proposed 40mph zone for part of Junction Road on Wednesday.

It is hoped the change from a 30mph limit will encourage drivers to use the route more often and ease traffic in the town centre.

It was built several years ago as a relief road connecting the Clashburn Road industrial estate to Station Road in Kinross. It was meant to act as a service route for a new housing scheme as well as for industrial estate traffic.

In a report to Perth and Kinross Council’s enterprise and infrastructure committee, traffic manager Charles Haggart said: “It was constructed to encourage drivers to use the route in order to by-pass the centre of town, thus reducing the volume of vehicles driving through the centre.

“Concerns have been raised by the local elected members that drivers are not using the route,” he said. “A reason for this has been given that the 30mph speed limit along the entire length does not lend itself to making the route appealing to drivers.

“As a result, they have requested that the existing 30mph limit be raised to 40mph on a section of the road.”

If approved, the new zone will begin at a point north of the industrial estate to just south of the Levenbridge Place junction.

Mr Haggart said the road has been assessed and was deemed appropriate for a faster speed.

A public consultation exercise will need to be held before any Traffic Regulation Order can be updated.
