A young Tayport dad who died following a horror road smash suffered a severe brain injury, a fatal accident inquiry has heard.

Owen Bissett, 25, died in Ninewells Hospital a week after his car was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry.

The accident happened just after 9am on November 20 last year, on the A85 at Gilmerton in Perthshire.

Details of Mr Bissett’s final moments were described during an inquest at Perth Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Christopher Shead was told that Mr Bissett regularly travelled throughout Tayside in his Honda Civic as part of his work with Dundee-based MGT Training.

On the morning of the crash, Mr Bissett had clocked in at work just before 8am.

He was due to drive to Crieff Hydro to meet his team leader at 9am.

The court heard that at 9.08am on the A85, near McAinish Cottage, Abercairney, Mr Bissett’s car was involved in a collision with an Isuzu lorry driven by David Scott of Edinburgh-based Hireline Ltd.

Passers-by went to Mr Bissett’s aid.

They said he was unconscious in his vehicle and appeared to have a serious head injury.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene and Mr Bissett had to be cut free from his vehicle by firefighters.

Under police escort, he was taken by ambulance to Ninewells’ intensive care unit and underwent a CT scan which found he had suffered a “massive brain injury”, the court heard.

He was pronounced dead at 1.18pm on November 26.

The cause was noted as a cranio cerebral injury and blunt force trauma.

Sheriff Shead will publish his findings in due course.

Following Mr Bissett’s death, a statement issued by Police Scotland said: “Mr Bissett’s family are understandably upset by their sudden loss and have said that he will be greatly missed.”

Mr Bissett lived with his fiance and their young daughter in Elizabeth Street. Members of his family attended Wednesday’s hearing.
