A Perthshire councillor has welcomed the planned end to work on installing road safety measures in the heart of Blairgowrie.
Concerns had been raised by some businesses and shop owners in the Wellmeadow area of the town about the time taken to complete the various traffic systems aimed at reducing congestion in the busy area.
Traffic lights in the Wellmeadow were taken away in June following a two-week trial, but it now looks like work on the area is coming to an end.
This will include introducing a 20mph speed limit and installing new signs in the area.
Councillor Caroline Shiers, one of the representatives for the Blairgowrie and Glens ward, said: “This has been a very long-running and disruptive period for traffic around Blairgowrie and I think everyone will be very pleased when it is completed.
“In meetings with council officers, I have asked that a review period be built in so that we can review progress of the new system and address any issues that arise in the short term and in the longer term if needed.”
She continued: “The introduction of a 20mph limit is to be welcomed and I have also asked for a review of all the signage around the Wellmeadow to ensure it is clear for all road users and pedestrians.
“I have asked for a breakdown of the final costs for all of the works the installation of the failed traffic management system, the works to install the new system, all of the consultancy and engineering costs.
“I think it is really important that this is in the public domain and that the council uses this as an example of why we need to be confident that any similar exercise in the future is well thought out, consulted on and that the council does not waste money.
“We need to keep the traffic system under review to ensure that there is access across the roads for those with limited mobility or young children.
“With an increasing amount of building in the area projected for the future we also need to ensure that all of the infrastructure locally can cope with the increased traffic that will bring.”
A council spokesman said: “Perth and Kinross Council consulted with the community in Blairgowrie in detail regarding alterations to the traffic management system in the Wellmeadow after the initial scheme was found not to be working as intended.
“The majority of respondents were in favour of the alterations proposed. We consider we have now put in place arrangements which deliver what the local community indicated it wished to see in the town.
“The operation of the new system will be kept under review. However, initial assessment suggests traffic management has improved in Blairgowrie as a result.”
