Referee halts Perthshire under-15s tie in protest at abuse from sidelines

A Tayside under-15s football game was abandoned after a referee became fed up with the level of abuse he was receiving from the sidelines.

The Perth and Kinross Youth Football League match between Blairgowrie and Letham Whites on Sunday was called off 10 minutes before full time.

Referee Jim Small had sent off two Letham players and awarded two penalties to their opponents at Blairgowrie’s Davie Park decisions which, it is claimed, left the visiting camp, including parents, unhappy.

Dundee-based Mr Small has now submitted a misconduct report to league officials.

Letham coaches have also put forward their views to PKYFA, while Blairgowrie have been asked for the club’s take on the match.

Colin Goodison, league chairman and discipline secretary, confirmed that the 11-a-side game had been abandoned.

He said: “We’ve had a misconduct report from the referee and it will be going to our discipline committee.

“The outcome of that will be further down the line as we have to gather information about the match. We are just waiting on various statements coming in.

“I can’t really go into details until we deal with the case, but there are aspects of it we are looking into as regards behaviour on the sidelines.”

Mr Goodison added that football associations are in the middle of a “big clampdown” on bad behaviour, with parents, coaches and players asked to commit to a certain level of discipline at games and elsewhere.

Letham Whites coach Justin Buy said: “I’ve submitted a letter and I will say no more than that. I passed my comments on to Perth and Kinross YFA.”

Gavin Tomlie, who coaches Blairgowrie, said the game had not been bad-tempered but those on the opposing side had been irked by a number of the referee’s calls.

“It was between them and the referee. The sideline behaviour at times was pretty bad,” he said. “There was tension between the two of them from the start.

“At under-15s football, the sidelines should be better. The referee was taking a lot of abuse and you can totally understand the abandonment.

“I was probably more annoyed than them because we were 3-1 up.”
