The husband of an American tourist who was found dead three months after disappearing in Highland Perthshire has made a “generous” donation to a group which helped find her.
Donald McLean gave the undisclosed sum to K9 Search and Recovery Scotland, which helped in the search for his wife Susan over the summer.
The 61-year-old had been on holiday in Aberfeldy with her husband and two adult sons when she vanished on May 17. Her remains were found by volunteers on August 15.
Springer spaniel Barra and his handler Iain Marshall helped make several searches of the area in the weeks following her disappearance.
The group has now been thanked by Mr McLean.
He said: “They went out of their way to come and help search for Susan several times during the period she was missing.
“I hope that my small donation will make it possible for K9 Search and Recovery Scotland to continue to assist other families in finding their lost love ones.
“It was a good feeling knowing that they, along with so many other wonderful Scottish citizens, were concerned about finding and solving what happened to Susan.”
He added that he had received a lot of support back in America since Susan was found.
“Susan’s family had a lovely church service for friends and family in Groton, Massachusetts, in October,” he said.
“The following weekend we had a celebration of Susan’s life at our Pennsylvania farm. Both were well attended by friends from as far away as Texas, Florida, Colorado and Illinois.
“There was a memorial trail ride and picnic the last weekend in October for Susan, organized by a close friend. Donations were made to a local therapeutic riding program where Susan taught.
“We miss Susan so much and realize how much she did on a daily basis for us year round. Friends continue to say how much they miss her wonderful smile and her good humour.
“We are spending Christmas with Susan’s family and I am going on a trip Susan planned with a classmate and his wife in January.
“Good friends are so important in our lives especially when a great loss in life occurs. The people I met in Scotland and those I met through emails after I returned home are close to my heart especially in the dark times.”
Iain Marshall, of K9 Search and Recovery Scotland, thanked Mr McLean for his “very generous donation”.
He said: “Your kind gesture is very much appreciated and we will be sure to put the funds to good use assisting other families in their own time of need searching for lost loved ones.
“We cannot thank you enough for the generosity and kindness you have shown to our team.”
