Police officer tells court businessman ‘drove at 120mph’ before crashing into wall

A police officer has claimed that a Tayside property developer drove at 120mph before crashing his Mercedes into a wall in Longforgan.

Mark Harris, 45, is standing trial at Perth Sheriff Court charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop when requested to do so by police officers.

PC Stephen Cook claimed that Harris, of Mylnefield House, Invergowrie, “reached a speed of about 120mph” while travelling on the A90 in wet and dark conditions, despite officers flashing their lights as they followed him.

Harris was said to have turned into Longforgan Main Street. PC Cook stated that he and his partner slowed to 40mph and lost sight of the Mercedes. When they caught up with the vehicle they discovered that Harris had crashed through a wall into the gable end of a house.

When taken to hospital he failed to take a breath test and did not want to give a blood test as he has a fear of needles. PC Cook said that Harris “couldn’t form a seal around the breath tube”.

Harris is charged with speeding at more than 100mph on December 23 2013 on the A90 Dundee to Perth road.

He is also accused of driving at speeds of up to 60mph though Longforgan Main Street before crashing through a fence and a wall.

It is alleged that he failed to stop when required by police and failed to provide a blood sample.

The trial continues.
