The “voice of rugby” has posthumously lent his voice to a video aimed at raising the profile of the sport in Perthshire.
Archive commentary from Bill McLaren, who died in 2010, introduces the Perthshire Rugby film, which features a match played on the city’s streets.
The club received permission to use the audio, from previous Five Nations and Four Nations games, from the Bill McLaren Foundation.
The video was filmed on the streets of Perth and the legendary commentator is heard to announce that there is an “air of feverish anticipation at this very moment as one of the great sporting occasions is about to unfold” before a young player leaps from the shadows of St John’s Kirk.
The various teams then play along St John Street, pausing for a scrum outside skate shop Destable.
The ball is knocked into Campus Sports, with the players performing a line out and a maul, before the ball is run the length of the High Street for a final try next to the Tay.
Andy Cummins, the club’s director of rugby, said: “The main aim (of the video) was to promote the work the club is doing.
“The response has been fantastic we’ve had over 35,000 hits on Facebook. It’s gone world-wide because we’ve had former players from all over the world sharing it,” continued Andy.
“The feedback has been very positive.”
He added that including commentary from a rugby legend was important to them.
He said: “Bill McLaren was the voice of rugby in Scotland, that was the key thing.
“We had a dinner last year with the Bill McLaren Foundation, helping them fundraise, and from that they donated £15,000 to our floodlight project.
“It’s a way of raising awareness of the Bill McLaren Foundation.”
The video was shot for the club by local firm Morrocco Media.
