A Perthshire businessman has been arrested for an alleged rape in India.
Crispin Lamont, who ran a chain of gyms, is being held in custody amid claims he broke a local law by having sex with a woman on the pretext of marrying her.
In her complaint the alleged victim described as a 30-year-old entrepreneur met Mr Lamont on Facebook two-and-a-half months ago and met him to discuss business.
She alleges Lamont had sex with her more than once at his house in the Delhi’s Defence Colony area after he promised to marry her.
In India a man can be jailed for rape, if a woman consented to sex under false assurances that he planned to marry her.
Lamont, who is originally from Scone, was arrested on Saturday and will be held in judicial custody for 14 days, while police investigate the claims against him.
According to the Indian Voice newspaper, the alleged victim said she had decided to file a complaint after Lamont started avoiding her about a fortnight ago.
She also told investigators she left several e-mails and messages for Lamont, telling him how she felt violated, but he did not respond to them,
A post on Lamont’s Facebook page days before his arrest said: “That was a really cruel joke that you played on me.
“You assured me you were crazy about me, you went down on your knees and asked me to be your girl. I was so happy until I walked in to your home and found another woman there.
“You are a characterless cheat. I don’t know how anyone can be so deceitful”.
Lamont is chief executive officer of Ozone Fitness and Spa, which has six branches across Delhi.
A spokesman for the company said that Lamont joined the firm four months ago and had now been sacked.
“We have come to know of the incident and have no more detail,” he said. “At Ozone, we firmly believe that respect and safety of women is paramount and cannot be compromised.”
It is understood Lamont moved to India about a decade ago. He claims to have built fitness clubs for Russian oligarchs and monarchs across Europe.
An Indian police spokesman said: “We have arrested the Scottish national on charges of rape.”
