Olympic curler Eve Muirhead is following in some famous footsteps for her latest role: Chieftain of Crieff Highland Gathering.
Previous holders of the title have included fellow Olympian Allan Wells, actors Ewan McGregor and Denis Lawson and the games even boasts Prince William as its royal Chieftain.
Crieff Highland Gathering chairman Colin Crawford said he is “thrilled” that Eve agreed to be Chieftain this year.
“We know how busy she is, being an international athlete and travelling all over the world, as well as having all the other demands that being one of Scotland’s highest-profile sportswomen brings,” Mr Crawford said.
“However, I think that the high standing that the Crieff Gathering holds will yet again enable Crieff to benefit from the opportunity to be linked with a well-known and respected person such as Eve.
“We were keen to have Eve as our Chieftain as in addition to being one of our best sportswomen, her family have a long-established association with Crieff, and she is also an accomplished bagpiper in her own right.
“She has been a keen supporter of our traditional music, including being an ambassador of Piping Live in the past.
“We hope that Eve and her party will have an enjoyable day at the Crieff Highland Games and be entertained by the many traditional events, which include the Scottish Heavyweight Championships as well as the award-winning Scottish music band Skerryvore.”
For Courier columnist Eve, the honour will bring back many happy memories.
“I’m delighted to be Chieftain of Crieff Highland Games,” Eve said. “As a young child, I remember attending with my family and I can remember it being such a great day out for all ages and it definitely will be again this year.”
Crieff Highland Gathering will take place on Sunday August 16 and will be held at the traditional venue of Market Park.
