Crieff residents fear they are running out of time to ensure safety measures are implemented on a road hosting the town’s new primary school.
The state-of-the-art Broich Road school will replace the ageing and restricted Crieff Primary when it opens in August.
In February, Perth and Kinross Council announced it planned to widen the existing footpath, install new street lights and introduce a new 30mph speed limit along the length of the road.
However, a Crieff Community Council (CCC) road safety survey revealed the vast majority of residents feel that, even with the proposals which should be implemented by August, children’s safety would still be an issue.
Community councillor Craig Finlay said: “Our main concern has always been the width of the road it is just too narrow to accommodate large vehicles safely. This issue then leads on to the problem of the adjacent footpath also being very narrow.
“The public should be aware that, despite CCC’s best efforts over several months, we have almost run out of road in terms of getting real alterations along The Broich, not just cosmetic ones. We can still push for greater improvements if people give us their support now.”
A council spokesman said: “Broich Road itself will not be widened. Despite our best efforts, Tesco has refused our request to make any land available to allow further improvements in addition to what is planned.
“There are a number of different sections along Broich Road owned by different landowners which are unsuitable to widen, including the sections of the road either side of Crieff Primary School.”
