A dishonest dad found a novel way to pay for petrol on a family day out.
During a visit to the House of Bruar, near Blair Atholl, with his partner and young child, Peter Dick embarked on a spot of shoplifting to help cover the cost of the trip.
Although he managed to escape with his illicit goods, the 30-year-old was caught on camera stealing an expensive Barbour waistcoat, worth almost £70.
Police were then in a position to track Dick down to his Edinburgh home after spotting his car registration on CCTV.
Defence agent Paul Ralph told Perth Sheriff Court his client, who already has an extensive criminal record, had “overspent” before realising there wasn’t enough fuel in his car to get them home.
Dick, of Alan Breck Gardens, admitted the theft on June 23 last year.
Sheriff William Wood imposed a fine of £300 and a compensation order to cover the cost of the stolen waistcoat.
