Pedal power in Perth as cyclists take to the streets for National Youth Racing event
ByRichard Burdge
The centre of Perth looked like a stage of the Tour de France over the weekend with cyclists racing around the city streets.
The country’s top young cycling prospects 80 boys and 55 girls aged under-16 from Scotland, the north of England, Ireland and the Isle of Man moved into the city after a day of road races in and around the village of Forteviot on Saturday.
The hub of the Scottish Power National Youth Racing event was on the plaza outside Perth Concert Hall.
Event director Bob MacFarlane said: “The help and support of Perth and Kinross Council and local residents has been absolutely amazing.”
Crowds of people lined the route enjoying the spectacle and sunshine.
The air ambulance was scrambled from Scone and landed on the North Inch after two youngsters collided in the city centre but the casualties, aged 14 and 15, were taken by road ambulance one to Perth Royal Infirmary and the other, with fractures, to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
The riders move on today to Strathallan school and Forgandenny.
