A £9.4 million Perth school and nursery which was constructed under the watchful eyes of pupils has been officially opened.
Guests including John Swinney MSP and councillors joined with the pupils and staff from Oakbank Primary to unveil the facility which was built in the grounds of the old school.
During construction the pupils made the most of the chance to see their new school progress at first hand.
Nursery children, under supervision and with their hard hats on, inspected the building works through a special viewing window on site.
Part of Perth and Kinross Council’s ongoing programme of upgrades and improvements to the school estate, the project is the second to be delivered by the council in partnership with hub East Central Scotland as part of a design and build contract.
Designed by Holmes Miller Architects and built by BAM Construction, the building works to replace the old school began in April 2014 and pupils and staff occupied the new facilities in June last year.
External works then got under way and were completed in November.
The school has 14 classrooms, all of which have break-out spaces for pupils, along with nursery accommodation, a multi-use games area, and additional support needs facilities.
Perthshire North MSP Mr Swinney, who performed the official opening, said: “Here at Oakbank, I know that both the local and school communities are delighted with the finished product and remain very impressed with the pace at which this wonderful building took shape.
“This investment by the Scottish Government and Perth and Kinross Council is much more than financial; it is first and foremost an investment in our children’s education and future.
“My thanks to the team in education and children’s services at the council for coordinating this development and my best wishes to the generations of young learners who will now benefit from this world-class teaching environment.”
Perth and Kinross Council leader Ian Miller said: “The new Oakbank Primary School reflects the council’s aim to provide the high-quality learning environment that our children and young people need.
“I believe that this modern and attractive new school will encourage and inspire children to learn and achieve their fullest potential.”
