Demolition work is due to be completed on flats in Bridgend in Perth after it was deemed the building concerned posed a danger to the public.
Contractors appointed by Perth and Kinross Council began razing the properties in East Bridge Street at the weekend.
The structural problems came to light initially in December last year, when a damaged supporting wall was brought to the attention of the local authority.
Consultant engineers deployed by the council established that the damage caused to the wall, coupled with the poor state of an adjoining gable end, meant that there was no way to repair the building to a safe standard.
The council said that its main aim was to save the building in East Bridge Street and that the responsibility for repairs rested with the owners of the flats concerned.
A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council confirmed the demolition work was near completion.
Bridgend resident Stuart Glencorse told The Courier that he was “obviously” very sad for the residents of the building.
He said: “I can only imagine how losing your home in such a way must feel. It is also very sad for Bridgend as a community and Perth as a city to lose yet another older building.
“I just hope and pray Perth and Kinross Council and our councillors take some proactive and immediate action to arrest the decline and decay in both Bridgend and Perth.
“I hope that this extremely sad affair will finally result in some positive action to halt the decline of Bridgend, an important gateway into our Fair City.”
