After sleeping in and missing his lift, a prisoner went on the run for almost a month.
Michael Murray had been granted a period of home leave from HMP Castle Huntly to spend the weekend in Glasgow.
The 22-year-old was due to be picked up at noon on June 1 from the city’s bus station, but failed to appear for his lift.
Perth Sheriff Court heard he was only found after being arrested for committing an offence in Kirkintilloch 29 days after his disappearance.
Defence agent Moira Grant said that “matters snowballed” after her client, who had previously been regarded as a “model prisoner” missed the bus back to the open prison at Longforgan.
“He had contacted me shortly before his arrest to ask for advice on how to resolve the situation,” she added.
Before he could hand himself in, however, Murray was detained by police officers.
She also revealed that her client was due to be considered for early release, but had now been transferred to HMP Shotts, a maximum security prison in Lanarkshire.
Murray, described as a prisoner at HMP Shotts, admitted that between May 29 and June 1, he failed to return to HMP Castle Huntly after a period of home leave.
Sheriff Fiona Tait imposed a prison sentence of eight months.
The new sentence will be added on to his current term.
