A controversial housing plan has received a “near record” number of objections for a residential development.
Perth firm Friarton Limited want to build three properties on land between the city’s Needless Road and Cavendish Avenue.
However they face stiff opposition from residents, many of whom believe the path is a right of way.
Perth and Kinross Council has received more than 70 objections to the proposal, and just one letter in support.
Councillor Willie Wilson said the high response showed the strong feelings of the Craigie community.
He said: “It must be a near record for a small residential development. It’s very unusual to receive such a high volume of objections for a residential development planning application.
“This clearly shows not only the level of feeling on the matter but the level of community that’s always present in Craigie.
“There are two basic issues. The first is about the path, where all the objections are adamant in their support for an adequate public path through the site.
“This requires to be wide enough for pedestrians, buggies, wheelchairs and cyclists and must be well lit and well maintained in the future.
“The current application simply doesn’t allow for any through access by the public that is completely unacceptable to the local community.
“The second issue relates to the housing proposals themselves. There’s strong local feeling that the site should continue to be used for garages as there’s a high level of demand for both garages and parking in the area.”
A public drop-in session on the issue last night drew a crowd of more than 50 people.
One person who was at the meeting said emotions had been running high but that the gathering had remained civilised.
“People were very upset,” he said. “They are angry about the whole plan, that’s why they turned up.”
The Scottish Rights of Way and Access Society has already said that the route could potentially be a right of way as it meets all the criteria.
A spokeswoman for Perth and Kinross Council said the plans were still under consideration as part of the planning process.
