Perth City Hall cherub’s wing landed up in stonemason’s garden
ByThe Courier Reporter
The cherubs that crown Perth City Hall’s front elevation are beloved by some and derided as trash architecture by others including Strathmore Councillor Alan Grant.
He has dubbed them “putti” rather than cherubs, in light of their missing wings, and has claimed that they were never there in the first place.
One of the missing appendages has, however, now been brought to light by retired stonemason Andy Bett.
He said the wings were removed by the firm of Brand of Perth on the insistence of the council around 60 years ago, on health and safety grounds.
Mr Bett, now 75, said he was a 15-year-old apprentice when he watched them being removed from the roof of the hall.
He said: “They sat in the stonemason’s yard for years before I bought one when my former boss retired. It’s been in my garden ever since.”
