ByThe Courier Reporter
A number of rare and historic sporting guns will go under the hammer at Gleneagles Hotel next month.
Organised by Gavin Gardiner in association with Sotheby’s, the 46th annual sale features examples by some of the UK and Europe’s finest manufacturers dating from 1860 to the present.
The sale is held to coincide with the first weeks of the Grouse shooting season and attracts bidders and buyers from all over the world.
Numerous record prices have been set at previous sales and the auctioneers look forward to repeating that this year. Among the prime lots will be a rare pair of 12-bore sidelock ejector over and under guns by London maker James Purdey & Sons.
Completed in 1964, the pair remain in excellent condition and are in their original case with extra barrels and are expected to sell for between £55,000 and £65,000.
Viewing takes place on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, from 10am-5pm each day.
There will also be viewing on Monday, September 2, from 10am-3pm, prior to the evening’s sale.
