A German motorist caught driving at 110mph on the M90 claimed he wasn’t aware of the speed limit.
Perth Sheriff Court heard yesterday that Karsten Reihs, 52, of Cologne, wrongly believed he could drive as he did on the German autobahns, where there are no blanket speed limits.
Depute fiscal Robbie Brown said police saw Reihs’s car speeding at the Kinross interchange on the M90 at around midnight.
“Officers followed the car as it continued on the road near Glenfarg the average speed was 110mph for a distance of three-quarters of a mile,” he said.
When stopped, he told officers that he was unaware of the speed limt.
Solicitor Erica Watson, defending, said her client, a scientist, is on holiday with his family staying at Glen Isla, having driven through the Channel Tunnel, but admitted he should have looked into the speed limits in the UK on arrival.
“My client’s family had been in Edinburgh and were making their way home,” she said.
“He accepts he drove as he would on roads in Germany.”
Reihs admitted that he drove at 110.6mph on the M90 Inverkeithing to Perth motorway, near junction eight on Wednesday. The speed limit on the road is 70mph.
He was fined £300 and banned from driving in the UK for two months.
