A daredevil dog sparked a major rescue operation when he took a cooling dip in the River Devon.
Around 40 firefighters rushed to Rumbling Bridge in Kinross-shire after Toby the golden labrador tumbled 20ft down a gorge. The 12-year-old pet had been enjoying a walk with his family on Thursday afternoon when he suddenly disappeared from view.
Owner Hannie Heyes, of Dunfermline, told The Courier how their day out almost ended in tragedy.
“We were walking along the path when we realised Toby wasn’t there,” she said.
“We discovered him way back down the river, having been carried down by the current and even fallen down a couple of waterfalls. We managed to get him on to a ledge and kept him there until the fire engines arrived.”
The 19-year-old student looked on as firefighters abseiled down to Toby and secured her beloved pet in a harness.
She said: “He’s a bit old for all of this, but luckily he’s a strong swimmer and loves the water.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed 11 appliances attended at Rumbling Bridge just after 3pm.
They got Toby back on to dry land within an hour, thanks to the efforts of officers.
