Alan Cumming offers Perthshire schoolkids support for big stage production

Young actors from a tiny Highland Perthshire school have attracted the attentions of Broadway.

Pupils at Grandtully Primary School received a heartfelt good luck message from an award-winning thespian as they finalise preparations for an end-of-term production.

Alan Cumming, starring in a one-man performance of Macbeth in New York, sent the youngsters a cheery note after being contacted by a teacher via Twitter.

He wrote: “Break legs everyone! That means good luck! Love from Alan x”.

The special message was unveiled to the students as they took part in a final dress rehearsal on Tuesday and principal teacher Ciara Gibson revealed they were big fans of the Hollywood actor, who was born in nearby Aberfeldy.

She told The Courier: “I was tweeting him because he was involved with the Birks Cinema and all the children had been there for the opening.

“They were aware he had been involved and since we follow him on Twitter, we knew he was appearing in Macbeth.

“I just sent Alan a message saying that the future stars of the stage would also be treading the boards in Grandtully and he replied soon after.

“I really didn’t expect him to get back to us but it was fantastic.”

Along with head teacher Laura McIntosh, Ms Gibson has been helping the children stage their production of Roald Dahl’s Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, which takes place this evening at 6pm in Grandtully Village Hall.

She described Grandtully School, which has a roll of just 17 children, as “small but mighty”, adding: “The things we are doing are huge and it’s completely pupil-led.”
