The Coupar Angus plant.
The jobs of 1,000 workers in Coupar Angus were looking more secure last night when a major UK firm was given the go-ahead to buy meat processor Vion.
Birmingham-based 2 Sisters has agreed to buy the Dutch firm’s UK operations which include the Perthshire chicken processing plant, McIntosh Donald red meat processors in Portlethen and a plant in Cambuslang.
In November, VION announced its UK pull-out but last night Scottish finance Secretary John Swinney said 2 Sisters had received Office of Fair Trading approval for its bid to buy Voin.
Mr Swinney said: “I am delighted that the OFT have taken a positive decision to back vital investment in Scotland’s food and drink industry by 2 Sisters Food Group, safeguarding jobs across the country.”
Ranjit Singh, chief executive of 2 Sisters Food Group, said: “We are delighted to be acquiring VION UK’s poultry and red meat businesses.
“They have faced significant uncertainty and tough trading in recent months, but today’s acquisition secures a viable future.”
