Re-Cycle scheme means new life in Africa for old bikes
ByThe Courier Reporter
Abandoned and long-forgotten bikes are being sought for a new initiative aimed at helping communities in Africa.
Residents of Dundee and Perth are being urged to take their unwanted bicycles to their local Halfords branch as part of a six-day amnesty from today until Tuesday.
As well as clearing space in their garages and sheds, donors will be given an added incentive of a 10% discount on a brand new model.
All bikes in reasonable condition will be accepted, provided they are complete with no cracks in the frame and less than 25% rust.
The scheme has been launched in partnership with charity Re-Cycle and aims to collect 6,000 bikes, which will then be refurbished and distributed to provide affordable transport for people in Africa.
This can help increase the opportunities for children to go to school and for adults to find work.
Halfords chief executive Matt Davies said: “This is a great opportunity for customers to get rid of those bikes which are not being used and give to a great cause.
“Our partnership with Re-Cycle will mean that these unwanted bikes will provide an opportunity which will result in people in Africa being able to transform their lives.”
