A Blairgowrie woman picked to perform in the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony is hoping to inspire local youngsters to follow in her footsteps.
Jennifer Younger (22) returned from Delhi keen to share her “incredible” experiences and encourage school children to pull on their dancing shoes.
She will be teaching a new set of street dance classes at leisure venue Live Active Blairgowrie next month. They are aimed at children aged five to 17 and Jennifer will be incorporating some of the choreography she learned while training for the flag handover.
She was selected to join the 352 volunteers who delivered a dance routine full of Scottish flavour, giving the crowd of 60,000 and the millions more who watched on TV a taste of what is to come at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
She said, “The whole experience was just incredible and I want to be able to share it. It was great to be part of such an international event and it made me realise how important Scottish dance traditions are.
“However, I think we also need to give them a modern twist in order to encourage more children to learn to dance.”
She added, “I started dancing when I was five years old and have been teaching for six years now, so I love showing children everything I have learned over the years.”
Operations manager at Live Active Blairgowrie Kevin Riddell said, “We are proud to have had a member of our staff represent our country at a national level. We hope children will love Jennifer’s new classes and we are sure that she will pass on her experience and enthusiasm to the children she teaches.”For further information about the street dance classes for pre-school and school children contact Live Active Blairgowrie on 01250 873724 or visit www.liveactive.co.uk
