A Kinloch Rannoch man has died after falling ill at police headquarters in Perth last week.
James Milne, 54, passed away at Perth Royal Infirmary on Saturday after becoming “seriously ill” while in custody.
An investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances and other prisoners were transferred to Dundee to allow inquiries to take place.
The Crown Office confirmed it has instructed the new police investigations and review commissioner to oversee the probe.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “A report into the findings of their investigation will be submitted in due course to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
“It would be wrong for us to comment further.”
Mr Milne had been taken into police custody following an alleged disturbance and had been arrested with another man.
Paramedics gave him emergency CPR and he was rushed to hospital during last Tuesday’s incident. He remained in a critical condition until his death.
The Police Federation said it was giving support to officers involved in the ongoing inquiry.
