Student ran off with cash after offering iPad for sale

A student who tried to run away from the sale of an iPad that went wrong had sentence deferred at Perth Sheriff Court in a case described as “unexplainable” by a sheriff.

The court heard on Tuesday how Arkan Elherik, 19, of Thurso Crescent, Dundee, had met up with a woman at a hotel car park in Perth to discuss the sale of his computer after he had advertised it on Gumtree.

However, depute fiscal Stuart Richardson said that, when the woman examined the iPad in her car, she found the accused still had personal information on it.

“The woman asked the accused to delete this information, but she had already handed over £400,” he said. “The accused walked away with both the money and the iPad. The woman thought this was a joke and went after Elherik, but he started running.”

The court heard Elherik then “bumped” into a passer-by and that other people intervened and he was detained by the police.

Solicitor John Adams, defending, said his client had had a “number of successful dealings” on Gumtree and that he had not intended to take the iPad and the money.

Elherik admitted that on March 8 in Leonard Street, Perth, he stole £400.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis described Elherik’s actions as “unexplainable” and deferred sentence until May 14 next year, for him to be of good behaviour.
