A fundraising foursome will be burning the midnight oil as they swing their way round six Tayside and Angus golf courses next week.

The friends, from Perth’s Scottish Communications Group, are to take on a 24-hour marathon in aid of Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.

The round-the-clock endurance challenge is the latest taken on by the group, which has adopted the recently launched Perth Airport-based helicopter air ambulance as its charity of the year.

Company employees have already raised more than £4,000 for SCAA by abseiling off the Forth Rail Bridge.

Now, Liam Mowat, Stuart Leslie, Alistair Shaw and Brian Davidson will tee off at Downfield Golf Course at 8am on Thursday then power their way round the 18-hole courses at Panmure, Scotscraig, Blairgowrie, Piperdam and Monifieth.

They aim to finish their mammoth effort by around 8am the following day.

“We had to make it challenging in order to attract sponsorship and I think we’ve certainly achieved that,” Liam said.

“It will push us as players but it’s all for a great cause.”

The four golfers insist they will not be using buggies at any stage but plan to carry their clubs as they tread the fairways and greens of the six courses.

“We’re determined to complete the challenge, no matter how tired we get or how bad the weather is,” Liam said.

“A couple of the courses will be played during the night and we have contingency plans involving glow-in-the-dark golf balls and floodlights attached to buggies to help us through.”

Four of the courses chosen for the challenge are in the top 15 golf courses in Scotland and most are Open qualifiers.

The group has already secured more than £1,200 through its JustGiving page and each of the six courses is donating free play on the day. “Hopefully golfers throughout the area will recognise the very real challenge we have set ourselves and get behind us and the charity,” Liam added.

“Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance is a fantastic new, life-saving national resource and could be called on to help golfers anywhere at any time. As a company, the Scottish Communications Group plans to hold several more fundraisers throughout the year but, as golfers, this challenge really appealed to us.”

Liam plays off 10, Stuart 19, Brian 16 and Alistair 6 and the quartet are members at Piperdam, Kinross, Piperdam and Carnoustie, respectively.
