The murderer of a Tayside father-of-five is still at large a year after the killing.

John McMurchie, 50, died from hisinjuries after being found with a stab wound to the heart in a Dundee street on August 12 last year.

Despite an extensive police investigation which included more than 1,000 witness statements, no one has yet been charged with the murder.

A police spokesman said last night that the investigation remained open and the force “firmly believed” that someone held the key to bringing the killer to justice.

Mr McMurchie, who was from Errol, had been socialising at an address on Murrayfield Gardens shortly before he was found fatally injured on Fintry Terrace.

Police said he had got into a “significant physical altercation” with someone in the building. The house was returned to its occupier in January following a five-month forensic investigation there.

Uniformed officers and detectives carried out a three-day operation in Whitfield the same month in a bid for fresh leads into the murder.

In April members of Mr McMurchie’s family criticised the investigation and told The Courier they believed police had “given up” trying to find the killer.

A police spokesman said: “The case into the murder of John McMurchie on Sunday August 12 2012 remains open and our thoughts are very much with his family at this time.

“Throughout the course of our investigation into Mr McMurchie’s murder we have spoken with hundreds of people and taken more than 1,000 witness statements but we firmly believe there is still someone who has that vital piece of information that could assist us in bringing the person responsible for John’s death to justice.

“As such, I would appeal to anyone who has any knowledge of John’s death that they think could assist us, whether you have spoken with us before or not, to get in touch. Your call could be crucial.”

The charity Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £5,000 to anyone providing information to them anonymously via 0800 555 111 that leads to the arrest and conviction of any person in connection with Mr McMurchie’s murder.
