Three appliances from Perth were dispatched to the jail in Edinburgh Road at around 3am. The fire is believed to have been started by an inmate in his cell. A spokeswoman for the fire service said the blaze had been extinguished before firefighters arrived on the scene. A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service told The Courier: “We can confirm there was a cell fire in HMP Perth in the early hours of Wednesday. “The fire was put out by prison staff prior to the fire service attending.”
