Firefighters tackle blaze in Perth Prison cell

Fire crews were called to tackle a small blaze at Perth Prison in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Three appliances from Perth were dispatched to the jail in Edinburgh Road at around 3am.

The fire is believed to have been started by an inmate in his cell.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said the blaze had been extinguished before firefighters arrived on the scene.

A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service told The Courier: “We can confirm there was a cell fire in HMP Perth in the early hours of Wednesday.

“The fire was put out by prison staff prior to the fire service attending.”
