A police driver reached speeds of 147mph on the A9 in pursuit of a pair of motorcycling cousins.
James Angus Anderson (28) and namesake James Angus Anderson (24) tore past the traffic car on August 10 last year.
Perth Sheriff Court was told that they reached speeds in excess of 110mph on single carriageway stretches of the notoriously dangerous road.
It took the officers four and a half miles to catch up.
The cousins, both from Ryebank, Livingston, were found guilty of driving carelessly and at high speed on the A9 by Dalnacardoch and layby 63 near Dalnamein Lodge, by Calvine.
Anderson senior’s solicitor Martin Black questioned the safety of the officers who had themselves travelled at very high speeds.
Sheriff Michael Fletcher fined Anderson senior £400 and banned him for six months and imposed a £350 fine and a four-month ban upon the younger cousin.
A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said: “There are operational situations when police officers are required to drive in excess of the posted speed limits.”
She added that all officers permitted to do so are trained to “a very high standard” and are expected to exercise “all necessary care and discretion”.
