‘All talk and no action’ – Perth and Kinross councillor slams SNP over ‘bedroom tax’ plea

The SNP group on Perth and Kinross Council was criticised for failing to support a plea to object to welfare reform proposals.

Councillor Peter Barrett suggested writing to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to urge the postponement of the so-called “bedroom tax”.

He said: “This council, with the backing of all parties, should write . . . to make the case for deferral.

“I will put my name to that letter and I am sure that all colleagues in this chamber will join me.”

The suggestion was not taken up by SNP councillors at the meeting chaired by committee vice-convener Councillor Kate Howie.

Mr Barrett said: “Despite making many criticisms of welfare reform, Councillor Howie declined the opportunity to build a political consensus.

“The SNP proved that they won’t stand up for local people, they were the only party to voice dissent and they have ducked the challenge to speak up on behalf of our community.

“They won’t even sign a letter and they aren’t interested in mitigating the impact of welfare reform. They are all talk and no action.”

However, Mrs Howie replied: “We are not complacent and know there are going to be huge problems, but we are making preparations for it and are identifying, at an early stage, the most vulnerable folk.”
