A new generation of athletes will ride into Perthshire this month for a special event.
Cementing the area’s reputation as a hub for cyclists, the GB Cycling Youth Tour of Scotland has chosen Perth as its latest venue. The city centre will be transformed into a closed road circuit on April 7.
Hundreds of young riders will provide an exciting spectacle for residents and visitors, who will be given the opportunity of spotting the next Bradley Wiggins or Mark Cavendish.
The Youth Tour, which is supported by Perth and Kinross Council and has been organised by British Cycling and Scottish Cycling, is also set to head out into the local countryside.
The first stage will be held on a five-mile circuit around Forteviot, while the second stage of the competition takes cyclists into Perth. Strathallan School has the honour of hosting the GB sports stars on their third stage, while the finale will follow a two-mile course between the school and Forgandenny.
As well as hosting the GB Cycling Youth Tour of Scotland, the Fair City will also welcome the UK’s elite female cyclists.
They will take part in a three-stage City of Perth Women’s grand prix, which is the first round of the 2013 Women’s Road Race Series. This is also set to take place on April 7.
George Street, Mill Street and a section of Kinnoull Street between Mill Street and Scott Street will be closed between 9am and 1pm while the races take place.
Signed diversions for other vehicles will be in operation, although emergency vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained.
Enterprise and infrastructure convener John Kellas welcomed the event, saying: “Perth and Kinross has proved itself to be a popular location for cycling events in recent years and we are pleased to welcome the Youth Tour of Scotland and the elite Women’s Road Race Series to the area.
“This should be an exciting event for both the racers and spectators on the streets of Perth.”
