An Olympic 2012 London gold medalist has opened a canoe slalom centre in Highland Perthshire.

Tim Baillie, fresh from competing in Premier Division ranking races on the River Tay at Grandtully at the weekend, cut the ribbon to officially open the Aberfeldy Slalom Centre.

The facility will be available to both beginners and elite paddlers, who seek to enhance their skills in the sport of canoe slalom.

The centre has been developed by the Breadalbane Canoe Club with support fromScottish and Southern Energy (Griffin Wind Farm), the Scottish Foundation and Mains of Murthly Farm.

Guests were given a tour of facilities with club representatives before the paddlers took to the water for the first competition at the venue.

Fred Cochrane, Breadalbane Canoe Club chairman, said: “We are very excited at the opening of the new slalom centre.”

The canoe club was also presented with PACES development level accreditation yesterday by Perth and Kinross Council.
