Fear Maidens visit Edinburgh for roller derby chaos

Fear Maidens visit Edinburgh for roller derby chaos

The wheels of fury will be out this weekend as one of Perth’s top roller derby teams go head to head with Edinburgh’s Cannon Belles.

The Fear Maidens will take part in the league’s first competition tomorrow afternoon at the Meadowbank Sports Centre.

Hoping to cheer them on to victory will be members of the Fair City Rollers, Perth’s own roller derby league side.

Chairwoman Nikki Thomas said, “It’s been a real slog to get roller derby established in Perth and get to this stage, but its all starting to come together and we have a really strong team ready to compete against Edinburgh.

“It’s our first bout (competitive fixture), so we’re really excited and I know the Fear Maidens will give it their all.

“It’s a pity we won’t be making our debut in front of our home crowd, but we’ll enjoy ourselves whatever the score.”

Tickets for tomorrow’s bout, titled Jurassic Skate Park, are available on the door for £6 or in advance for £5 from www.arrg.co.uk.

Meanwhile, the Fair City Rollers are desperately seeking new practice space, as they have now grown to 40 members, which is proving difficult for Stanley Village Hall to accommodate.

Unfortunately, they are finding it difficult to attract support from larger venues due to concerns about their wheels damaging the floor.

Nikki said, “Teams from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee have overcome similar barriers to gain practice space and Perth risks falling behind the other Scottish teams if we can’t resolve this.

“Both our practice facilities are outside Perth and, although our girls are dedicated and willing to travel to train, it would make the sport so much more accessible if we could secure a permanent training facility within Perth itself.”

For those interested in taking part in the roller derby league, a Fresh Meat Thursday event takes place on the first week of every month at Stanley Village Hall.

It is open to all women over 18, regardless of experience, and the team is also looking for men over 18 years to train as referees.
