Two men have been detained by police after a man was found near the River Tay in Perth with fatal head injuries.

The victim, named locally as Willie Reid, was found lying in the multipark near Bute Drive at around 4.30am on Saturday.

He was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police said a 19-year-old and a 24-year-old were assisting investigating officers with their inquiries.

The victim’s death was being treated as ”suspicious”.

Police have not yet named the man, but he is believed to have been in his 20s. A post-mortem is due to take place and the man’s details will not be released until he has been formally identified.

Police refused to confirm or deny reports that the victim had been stabbed following a Christmas night out.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the North Muirton area.

Police cars were parked at the site throughout Saturday and into Sunday.

A large area of grass adjacent to blocks of flats was cordoned off while police scoured the area.

The generator of a command unit buzzed noisily as it sat in the ice-bound car park of the Jeanfield Swifts junior football club.

Residents of the nearby flats said they were unaware that anything was amiss until they saw the police officers on scene.

A spokesman for the force said: ”Tayside Police are treating his death as suspicious and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

”Forensic examination is under way at the scene where the man was found and door-to-door inquiries are under way. Officers are also undertaking a review of CCTV coverage.”

He added that they were unsure how the victim has sustained his injuries and they were keen to trace people who may have seen a man in the area at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information that could assist police inquiries is asked to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.
