A TOP baker has told of his horror after his shop was broken into just hours after appearing on national television.
Sugar & Spice bakery in Auchterarder featured in Thursday’s edition of Britain’s Best Bakery, which was broadcast at 4pm on ITV1.
But around 12.30am the store’s CCTV cameras captured someone trying to break down the door.
It is thought the culprit was disturbed as they left before taking anything from the shop.
Staff made an appeal on Facebook at around 7am on Friday after discovering a large hole in the door.
Baker Allan Devlin said he was “absolutely gutted” to discover the break-in.
“They didn’t get in,” he added. “They got disturbed.
“They kicked the back door and managed to get their hands in and take the snibs off. They were just youths but they’ve been apprehended because we caught them on CCTV.”
The business will now have to spend hundreds of pounds replacing the damaged door.
Mr Devlin said he couldn’t be sure if the break-in was related to the TV appearance.
“I wondered if it was a coincidence but I’m not sure. We’ve never been broken into before, because we have such good security systems.”
Despite failing to go through to the next round of the competition, the bakery has been inundated with orders from across the country but the break-in had caused it a setback.
Mr Devlin said: “We have orders going as far as Devon. We’ve done really well off it (the show).
“We have orders going all over the country, which is good, and we have had people from Japan, Australia and New York visiting our website there’s been some good feedback from it.
“We knew we were going to have a busy day today and they (the culprits) have pulled us back.”
A police spokeswoman for said: “We can confirm that an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old have been arrested in connection with this incident.”
On Britain’s Best Bakery, Sugar & Spice was competing against shops in Dunbar and Gullane.
Mr Devlin baked its signature Scotch pie and millionaire’s shortbread.
