Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has asked the Royal Mail to clarify changes to the Perth delivery schedule.
Residents and businesses located in the PH1, PH2 and PH14 postcodes of the city have been notified of the changed postal service.
Yesterday, Mr Fraser said: “I am hopeful that the Royal Mail will be careful when implementing any changes to the current delivery timescale,” he said.
“Minimising the disruption to both households and businesses is paramount. Nonetheless, some small businesses in Perth will inevitably be affected. “
Many parts of Perth and Kinross are served by substandard Internet services and any revision to the postal service must be measured against the resultant impact on local business.”
He continued: “Without access to effective e-communications, an efficient postal service becomes a vital business tool and, as such, must be protected.
“I have written to Royal Mail in search of further clarification.”
A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said the changes were made as part of their “ongoing business-wide transformation”.
“These changes are essential to respond to changes in the postal market, as we are now delivering fewer letters, but more parcels,” she said.
“This is a commercial decision and will play a major part in helping to safeguard the future of the service and place the company on a viable and sustainable footing.
“The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the delivery route. This may be later or, possibly, earlier than previous delivery times. The majority of people will get their mail in urban areas by lunchtime. It may also mean that some customers will also have a different postman or woman.”
She added: “There will be a few teething problems as we bed in the changes and postmen and women adapt to them or new routes.
“We apologise if customers have seen an impact. However, Royal Mail is doing everything possible to maintain a high level of service .”
