Provost John Hulbert says he hopes there will be some economic spin-offs as a result of his forthcoming visit to Perth, Ontario.

A twin town of Perth in Scotland, the Canadian Perth had requested that the provost visit from June 30 to July 4 for various events.

These include the second annual kilt run the inaugural event last year was held in honour of the twinning arrangement between the towns and of the Perth 800 celebrations.

More than 1000 kilted runners took part in a 10km race and achieved Guinness world record status. On Wednesday, Dr Hulbert told the provost’s sub-committee he was asked if he would like to run but politely declined.

The committee agreed funding the flights of the provost and a council officer along with civic gifts at a cost of up to £2900, though Dr Hulbert said he hoped it would be less.

The lady provost will travel at her own expense and accommodation and meals will be paid for by the Corporation of the Town of Perth.

Dr Hulbert said that as Perth in Canada was only a small community around 6000 people they had kept the party to a minimum so their hosts didn’t have to shoulder too great a burden entertaining the Scottish party.

The same committee agreed to a request to fund civic hospitality for the West End Bowling Club, Perth, to mark their 125th anniversary.

The first meeting of the West End Bowling Club took place in the County Hotel in Perth in 1887 and they are intending heading back to the same hotel on January 20 next year for a celebration.

The committee agreed to fund a wine and canape reception at a cost of £1020.
