A man has had his arm amputated after falling into the path of a train at Perth in a tragic accident.
The 21-year-old was struck by the train as it left Perth Station late on Sunday. The train quickly halted, but the man had sustained serious injuries to his arm.
He was rushed by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital where he underwent surgery. Despite the best efforts of medical experts, they were unable to save the limb.
The incident took place just before 11pm and medical teams, including a specialist trauma unit from Ninewells, were called to the scene.
Police interviewed shocked witnesses on the train and platform, while the service was halted for over an hour.
The accident is understood to have happened on platform two and to have involved a train heading from Glasgow through Perth on its way to Aberdeen. A number of Aberdeen football fans, making their way home from the game against Rangers at Ibrox, were on the train.
CCTV footage is being examined in an effort to explain how the accident happened.
One theory being investigated is that the victim left the train at Perth and was trying to reboard it as it left the station.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
“A 21-year-old man from Buckie slipped and fell off the platform and under the train,” said the spokesman. “He suffered a severe injury to his left arm and was taken to Ninewells Hospital.”
A passenger on the train said: “The train travelled a few hundred yards then ground to a halt. The train was delayed by over an hour while police took statements from the driver.”
