Mother’s terror after car windscreen shattered by rock

A Perth woman has spoken of her terror during an incident she said could have caused the death of her two young sons.

Reliving the moment a brick shattered her windscreen on the A9, Lynn Bruce said there had been a ”Christmas miracle”. Tayside Police said the incident happened between Inveralmond and Broxden at evening rush hour on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old from Craigie managed to maintain control of her Toyota Landcruiser 4×4 when the large rock hit spraying glass over her infant son. However had she been driving a smaller vehicle, she believes the outcome would have been different.

It is understood the ”missile” fell from the flyover by Noah’s Ark activity centre.

Ms Bruce, a single mother of six, was returning from delivering gifts in Luncarty with 13-week-old Kyle and two-year-old Aiden when the ordeal took place.

At home in Glentilt Terrace, she said: ”It’s a real Christmas miracle that we’re still here, I saw our lives flash before my eyes. It had been a lovely day, though the boys were getting tired and hungry so I was a bit harassed.”

She added: ”Suddenly, as I was passing under the flyover, a massive white lump came down out of nowhere. It was absolutely petrifying.

”It hit the bonnet with a massive bang and bounced up at the windscreen right where Kyle’s car seat was. Glass went everywhere but luckily I had put the hood of the seat up so his face was protected he could have been scarred for life.”

Ms Bruce said: ”I somehow managed to keep going as there was nowhere to pull over but as soon as I could I stopped and rang 999. The police were there within minutes and I rang my friend and 14-year-old daughter Ashleigh to come and get the wee ones.”

She added: ”Had I not been such an experienced driver or been in a wee car I doubt we’d be here. And had it hit the windscreen directly it could have crushed us.

”There was a similar thing a couple of months back that left people seriously injured you just hope no one would copy that.”

Police said a 19-year-old had been traced in connection with the incident and is due to appear in court on Friday.
