An 83-year-old woman has suffered a broken hip after being attacked in an attempted robbery in Perth.
The elderly woman was on the walkway that leads between Morrisons supermarket and Caledonian Road at about 6.35pm on Thursday when she was approached by a man who knocked her to the ground as he attempted to steal her handbag.
He then fled empty handed, running into Caledonian Road and heading north. The woman suffered a suspected fractured hip and was taken by ambulance to Perth Royal Infirmary where she is described as being in a stable condition.
Her attacker is described as being in his 20s and about 5ft 8in. He was wearing a dark hooded top over a lighter top, dark tracksuit bottoms and white trainers, as well as a black woollen hat.
A police spokesman said: “This was a despicable attack on an elderly member of the community which has left a woman badly injured. We are certain that the community shares our disgust at this man’s actions and we would appeal to them for their assistance in identifying him.”
A number came to the woman’s aid and police are keen to speak to them and any other witnesses.
Anyone who can assist should call 0300 111 2222, or speak to any officer.
Update at 14.09: Police say a 24-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident and is assisting with inquiries.
