Plans have been revealed for a £30m supermarket development which would create up to 400 jobs in Perth.
Edinburgh-based developer Manse LLP is hoping to build a 55,000 sq ft store and associated petrol station at Newton Farm, a 6.8-hectare site bordering St Johnstone FC’s home at McDiarmid Park.
The store, which Manse hopes to start constructing this autumn, is being taken forward despite the fact that a retail operator for the outlet has not been identified.
If given the green light the development would mean major changes to the road infrastructure in the area with construction of a new link road to provide access to the site.
A proposal notice has been lodged with Perth and Kinross Council for the development and a formal application is expected to follow in May.
A community engagement event is expected to take place next month at which Manse will outline the proposals.
The company said the Crieff Road Commercial Centre was an established retail destination Tesco has had an outlet in the area for some years and expressed confidence that the new store would not significantly impact on the numbers of shoppers visiting the town centre.
Manse managing partner David Mitchell said: ”We are delighted to be announcing these supermarket and new road infrastructure proposals, delivering investment and jobs, as well addressing recognised retail demand.
”The great advantage of this site is its deliverability, and being within an established commercial centre and adjacent to the existing population of Perth allows for greater sustainable travel opportunities meaning less reliance on car travel.
”We look forward to engaging with the local community over the next few weeks and hearing their views on this.”
Manse, founded in 2009, specialises in property investment, development, asset management and joint venture projects.
Two-thirds of the stock is held by David Mitchell and a third by London-based Palmer Capital, a family-owned property investment and development firm responsible for managing funds with a combined value of £500m.
