A ”despicable” attack on a woman in her Perth home by a balaclava-wearing thief has been roundly condemned.
The 68-year-old woman suffered a facial injury when she was confronted by the man who had gained entry to her house at Bridgend Court during an attempted robbery at 7.30pm on Sunday.
Paramedics treated the woman at the scene. She did not require hospital attention but will require further treatment to the injury.
The man made off empty-handed.
The pensioner has declined to talk about her ordeal, but Tayside Police described the attack as ”despicable”.
”We are certain that the community shares our disgust at this man’s actions and we would appeal to them for their assistance in identifying him,” said a spokesman.
Councillor Peter Barrett, one of the representatives for the Perth City Centre ward, labelled the incident as a ”cowardly assault” on an elderly woman.
”If anyone saw a man answering the police description on Sunday night in the vicinity of Bridgend, please contact the police,” he said. ”I am sure everyone in the area wants him apprehended.”
He added: ”With darker evenings, I would urge all local residents, and particularly the elderly, to take precautions against opportunist thieves.
”Make sure that windows are closed and doors are locked, and phone the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area.”
Police have issued a description of the man they are trying to trace.
He is described as being 5ft 8in and of medium build. At the time of the attack, he was wearing a black leather jacket, thick black gloves, and black shoes.
He was also wearing a black balaclava, which left only his eyes exposed.
The police spokesman confirmed no weapon was used in the incident.
