Two Perthshire joiners who assaulted a man in Perth town centre following a day at the races have been fined £750 each.
Grant Harrison (32), of Dunarn Street, Newtyle, and David Drummond (23), of Old Mill Buildings, Banff Road, Alyth, both admitted that on August 20 at South Methven Street, Perth, they did while acting with another person, assault Thomas Townsley by repeatedly punching him on the head to his injury.
A not guilty plea by Mark Bowden (36), of McLaren Park, Blairgowrie, was accepted by the Crown.
Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson told Perth Sheriff Court it was ”not the first time” there had been an incident between the group of men.
”This took place in Perth town centre on a Saturday night,” he said. ”Earlier that night Mr Bowden suffered injury when he was hit over the head by a bottle.”
The court heard there were a ”number” of police on duty with it being a Saturday night and that CCTV was in operation.
”Two men could be seen on the CCTV cameras repeatedly punching Mr Townsley on the head,” Mr Richardson added. ”He (Mr Townsley) fell to the ground and police then dealt with it.
”He was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary where he was treated for extensive bruising around his eyes, a 1.5cm laceration to his lower lip, a 0.5cm cut to the left side of his temple and he also lost a tooth.”
Solicitor David Holmes, acting for Harrison, said his client was a joiner and that the group had been out in Perth town centre.
”My client actually contacted the police afterwards telling them he was aware a man had been assaulted as he didn’t wish his family to be disturbed by officers,” he said. ”That shows a level of responsibility.”
He added: ”My client regrets striking Mr Townsley.”
