A new £23 million school could be created in Perth and Kinross in a bid to address the region’s fast-expanding population.
Draft proposals for the new ”all-through” school will be put before the Scottish Government this month in the hope of securing funding.
It would provide accommodation for 1,100 secondary pupils and a two-stream primary school, together with a nursery offering eight full-time and 40 sessional places.
The council will seek £23 million from the £1.25 billion Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) for Scotland’s Schools for the Future Programme to support the creation of the secondary school.
Council leader Ian Miller said: ”The council has made a commitment to provide the best possible education facilities for the children and young people of Perth and Kinross.
”With the restoration of city status, we are now looking to ensure that facilities of the standard to be expected in a city are in place.
”We also have to plan for the longer term, giving consideration to the projected demographic situation and the anticipated growth in our local population.”
The primary school is planned to be funded from developer contributions.
In addition, a further £7.6 million is being sought for the replacement of Tulloch Primary, which serves a community that has grown massively through new development over the past 15 years.
The brief for each project has still to be fully developed.
A site for the all-through school has not yet been specified but it is pencilled in for the north of Perth.
A deadline for applications to the SFT has been set for July 21 and the proposal went before members of the council’s strategic policy and resources executive sub-committee on Wednesday.
