A climber was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital with suspected spinal injuries after she fell from a ridge near Dunkeld.
A full-scale rescue operation was launched after the 40-year-old slipped at Polney Crag shortly before 3pm yesterday.
An ambulance was called, but because of the rough terrain, paramedics could not reach the victim and called for help from Tayside Fire and Rescue.
A pair of units from Perth including the heavy rescue vehicle and crews from Dunkeld and Pitlochry, were sent, and helped a local doctor and medical staff up the slope.
They were able to get the woman to a clearing for rescue by an RAF helicopter from Lossiemouth.
A fire service spokesman said, “At 2.50pm at Polney Crags on the outskirts of Dunkeld, a 40-year-old female climber had fallen and sustained injury and the ambulance was unable to reach her due to the terrain.
“We attended and asked for a helicopter and winch to attend. We also made the police aware it may have required mountain rescue at that point.
“We aided the ambulance service in moving the casualty to a stretcher and then got a doctor and paramedic to her and moved the doctor and casualty to a clearing for the helicopter to land.”
The victim and doctor were flown to Ninewells, where the woman remained last night. More details about her and her injuries were not released.
Polney Crag is a popular spot for rock climbers, offering varying degrees of rock face near the A9. It is understood several parties had been climbing in the area yesterday.
